Ibn Masud Centre of Excellence
– Nurturing Learners with Special Needs
The Ibn Masud Centre of Excellence is the brainchild of the Al-Ansaar
Foundation. Thirteen years ago, a group of dynamic individuals
comprising Mr Riaz Jamal, Mrs Zuleika Docrat and Mrs Shaamia Joosab
recognised the urgent need to establish a Madrasah for the Deaf.
Alhamdulillah (praise be to god) this proved a resounding success
and out of this project was born the Ibn Masud Centre of Excellence.
A needs analysis revealed that a special needs school underpinned
by an Islamic ethos was required in the Muslim community. With
the grace of Allah Ta`ala, the Centre opened its doors in January
2008.
The school caters for children with hearing impairment, speech
impediments, autism, muscular and cognitive disabilities, autism
and CAPD (Central Auditory Processing Disorder). They are between
the ages of 4 and 10. An afternoon Madrasah is also available
for other children.
Head of Islamic Studies, Apa Sakina Khaki is instrumental in
drawing up and executing an individual Islamic programme for each
learner. The centre offers comprehensive therapy: speech, occupational
and physiotherapy, and ball skills during school hours. The learner’s
holistic needs are further enhanced by monthly parent support
workshops and further skills training for staff.
Our aim is to create a centre where all learners with special
needs can find a place to learn, socialise and develop so that
they can accomplish and sustain a healthy and happy lifestyle.
The school has currently 13 learners. Each class has an educator
and facilitator. Alhamdulillah, the learners’ progress has
thus far superseded all expectations. The centre encourages community
participation. We humbly request duas that the centre continues
to be a source of empowerment, education and information for the
special needs community.
