Launch of first-ever Islamic based
Cancer Support Group in Durban
A long overdue ambition of the Muslim community drew a step closer
to fulfilment with the recent launch of an Islamic based Cancer
Support Group. The launch took place at the Mariam Bee Sultan
Hall, 222 Kenilworth Road, Overport, Durban on 20 March 2010.
The event was well-attended by some 100 patients, caregivers,
volunteers and other interested people. Moulana Mohamed Vanker,
a well-known `alim (Muslim theologian), delivered a message
of hope and encouragement. He said those who are ill belong to
the family of Allah Ta`ala. Moulana went on to relate the story
of Prophet Ayyub (AS), who despite his extreme hardship and suffering,
displayed constant sabr (patience) and never lost hope
of the mercy of Allah.
Oncologist Dr Riaz Mall then delivered an enlightening PowerPoint
presentation, which comprised an overview of the different types
of cancer and the types of treatments available. He also encouraged
patients to read up and become more familiar with the disease.
This was followed by a very lively question-and-answer session.
The final speaker for the afternoon, `Alimah Uzma Naheed Ghazi
of India, reinforced that “those with illnesses, Allah chooses
them and their duas are easily accepted. Therefore, visit the
sick and ask them to make dua for you.”
The Al-Ansaar Cancer Support Group will hold meetings on the
second Saturday of every month. New members are welcome. Contact
Sajida Osman at +27 31 207 7324 or +27 84 800 4667.
In keeping with the feedback received at the launch, all future
meetings will be less formal and more interactive. Ample time
will be allocated for patients and caregivers to share their experiences.
Topics to be covered by future speakers will include diet; motivational
talks; spiritual upliftment; and the role of and impact on families.
Medical professionals to unpack these issues will include oncologists
and psychologists.
